Having spent considerable time building real projects with both Astro and Next.js, I often get asked: “Which framework should I choose for my project?”

The short answer? It depends on what you’re building. But let me share my hands-on experience to help you make an informed decision.

I’ve built The World Explorer using Next.js and my personal portfolio at prakashraj.info using Astro. This real-world experience has given me insights into when each framework truly shines.

The Next.js Approach

When building The World Explorer, I needed dynamic features like real-time data fetching, complex user interactions, and server-side rendering. Next.js excelled in all these areas.

My Experience Building with Next.js

Creating The World Explorer taught me why Next.js is so popular in the enterprise world:

  • PageSpeed Score: 100/100 consistently
  • First Load: Lightning fast due to minimal JavaScript

Next.js Performance (theworldexplorer.vercel.app)

  • Bundle Size: ~180 kB JavaScript (with all features)
  • Largest Contentful Paint: 1.2 seconds
  • PageSpeed Score: 85-95/100
  • First Load: Slightly slower but offers rich interactivity

The Verdict: Astro wins on pure performance, but Next.js offers more functionality for the extra weight.


Developer Experience: A Tale of Two Approaches

My portfolio naturally ranks well because:

From Next.js to Astro

For Product Companies and SaaS: Next.js is likely your better bet. The full-stack capabilities and ecosystem make complex applications much easier to build and maintain.

For Beginners: Try Astro first. It’s easier to learn and will teach you good performance habits from the start.

For Experienced React Developers: Next.js will feel familiar and unlock powerful capabilities you already know.


Conclusion

Both Astro and Next.js are excellent frameworks that solve different problems brilliantly. My portfolio showcases Astro’s strength in creating fast, content-focused sites, while The World Explorer demonstrates Next.js’s power in building dynamic, interactive applications.

The key is understanding your project’s requirements:

  • Need maximum performance and simplicity? → Astro
  • Need full-stack capabilities and complex interactions? → Next.js

Don’t get caught up in framework wars. Choose the tool that best serves your users and your project goals.
